Imperial Fists 3rd Company: Updating the Collection

I realized it has been awhile since I updated my Imperial Fists Project, so I thought I would update where I am on collecting the miniatures.


I was going to start painting the army but I have decided to put it off until I have it all collected that way I will get a consistent paint job throughout the army. My recently finished Sisters of Battle army bothers me somewhat because I can see the difference of my painting over the years and that is something I would like to avoid with this army. The list is coming along nicely and it is mostly just vehicles that I have left. Hopefully I can get this army collected by the end of the year.

Imperial Fists 3rd Company: Collecting the Army

Well it has been a little since I did an update on my Imperial Fists. So far the army is progressing nicely. I decided on the 3rd Company with supporting elements from the 1st and 10th Companies as well as the Armoury and Librarius.

Once the Company and support was decided on I then decided to work on a paint scheme for the army. You can find the results of that work here.

Now with those decisions out of the way I have been going about collecting the army. My plan is to collect the entire 3rd Company as well as some of the supporting units I will be wanting to add in to my army lists. The following is where I am at as of today!

There is the list, it is looking pretty good so far. I am still deciding if I want to buy a Rhino for each Tac Squad or if I want to do a few Drop Pods. Overall I am happy with the Army's progress and I can't wait to get started on painting them.

Imperial Fists: Test Model #3

Well here is my 3rd test model for my Imperial Fists. This model was primed with white and then had several thin layers of golden yellow applied over the entire model as a base coat. Next I proceeded to paint all of the other details continuing with the 3rd company theme.

Once the model was fully painted, I used badab black wash on the metal areas such as the bolter and pack vents. I finished by carefully going over all the yellow components with Gryphonne Sepia, being sure that the details got filled in and no heavy areas of wash were on flat surfaces of yellow.

This is easily my favorite of the 3 test models. This will be how I paint my Imperial Fists. The only change I will do is to add more highlights before the wash as I can see areas where more highlighting is needed.

I really like doing the test minis first as it allows me to see a few variations of the armor as well as paint schemes. Originally I was going to go with 5th company but I just did not like how the black looked so I decided on 3rd instead. I was able to do this way before I touched any models that were actually going to be in my army thanks to my test models.

Imperial Fists: Test Model #2

Here is my 2nd test model for my Imperial Fists army. I only have two shots because I followed the same basic painting as my previous post Imperial Fists: Test Model #1. The only differences were that I used a white primer this time and I took the advice of Siph_Horridus and used less of the sunburst yellow and more of the Golden yellow.

In the finished model below I changed to 3rd company colors and added squad markings and fist logo. I am much happier with how this model looks. It still has a nice yellow color but also has the worn look that I am going for and I really love the red instead of the black on the shoulder pads. Of the two I have done so far this is by far my favorite.




My next test model will be primed white, I will be skipping Iyanden Darksun and just painting golden yellow as my base color. I am also going to be doing the wash towards the end of painting this time to see if I like that effect more.

Imperial Fist Army List ALPHA

I have Black Templars as my primary army so naturally when I decided to do a Codex Marine army I went with their founding chapter the Imperial Fists. The list below is a 2000 point list which I am going to use as my "to buy" list for my Imperial fists.

Eventually I will want to collect enough to make the entire 3rd Company, but I am going to buy the models for the list below as my starting point. I chose 2000 points because the majority of games around here are 1850-2000 points, so I figured to go to 2000 then I can subtract what I need to get to 1850.

So far I own 5 Tactical Squads, 1 Terminator squad, 2 full scout squads, a Devestator Squad, 2 Attack Bikes and Lysander. I am getting an Assault Terminator Squad as payment for a commission I did, so that will leave me mainly vehicles and a Librarian to purchase.

Well that is my list I am working towards. Please let me know what you think. I think it is pretty balanced and fluffy. I just need to figure out what to remove to get it down to 1850.

Imperial Fists: Test Model #1

Well now that my Black Templar Army is all but finished and my Sisters of Battle should go by pretty quickly, I decided to start preparations for my Imperial Fist Army. I browsed the web and found a few color combinations I liked and below is my step by step process for my first test model and color scheme.





My Test models are marines I have left over from the last 40K starter box set. The models have been stripped and repainted several times and are starting to outlive their usefulness, but they will work fine for this project as their last job. This is the model after a black undercoat was applied. Then the model was base coated with Iyanden Darksun foundation paint. Lastly I applied a coat of Gryphonne Sepia wash. I allowed this to dry overnight before I moved onto the next step.

My next step consisted of several drybrush layers of Golden Yellow. This took quite awhile to build up but I took my time so as to not fill in recesses where the wash had settled. In my future test minis I am going to touch up the Iyanden Darksun before proceeding to this step as the Golden Yellow had some problem covering some areas where the wash got on the armor plates.

This model was after several drybrushings of Sunburst Yellow were applied to the model. Again this step took awhile but I wanted to build up the layers without covering the recesses. At this point I am liking how the model is looking because the yellow looks weathered and not brand new and that is the look I am trying to achieve for my Imperial Fists












Ok I am not sure what happened but the picture for the next step was corrupted so I will post the final pic and just tell you how I got there. The next step was drybrushing on a 50/50 mix of Sunburst Yellow and Skull White. I used a smaller brush and really only applied this layer to the higher levels on the armor. Once I was satisfied with the yellow of the armor I then added the details you see in the picture. I like how the overall look of the model turned out, the yellow has the weathered looking effect I wanted.



What this test model did show me is that I don't like the black rim of the 5th company so I am going to go with the red rim of the 3rd company. I also did not like the black I used on backpack or the kneepad. I think in my next test model both of those will remain yellow. Overall I think this is a pretty good start and definetely somethign I can work from to get my final color combination. So please let me know what you think and I will be posting my 2nd attempt in the very near future.
