Tomb Priest with Cloak of Dunes

To the left you can see my scratch built Tomb Priest with Cloak of Dunes. This is my first attempt using this much green stuff. I usually use it for little add-ons here and there but as you can see over half of the models is Green Stuff.

I first placed a clear flying rod (upside down so the thick end was at the top) onto a 20mm square base. I then built of the ground and slowly built up the sand devil that the Tomb Priest would be carried upon. I let the green stuff cure for about 20 mins. I then came back and began sculpting in the rings to make the Sand Devil come to life.

After letting the Green Stuff cure for a few hours, I began to assemble the remaining pieces for the model. I got the body and left arm as well as some of the flying scarabs, from left over bits from my Necrosphinx. The death mask, staff and remaining scarabs came for bits left over from my Sepulchral Stalkers kit.

Overall, I am very pleased with how this model turned out. I liked the idea of the Cloak of Dunes turning the priests lower half into a small sand storm and that is where it gets the fly ability. I really like how I was able to make it look like the scarabs were sucked up into the storm and are flying out from where ever they can to make their escape. I know other out there in the blogosphere could do much better, but I will not improve if I don't get practice and I am pretty happy with my first larger scale effort with Green Stuff.

Well let me know what you think of my little project. I will post the finished product up once I have him all painted up.

Project Update: Casket of Souls

Just a quick post today to show a pic of my completed Casket of Souls. I painted it using the same colors as the rest of my army. If you notice I have no priest on the Casket. This is intentional so that I can give the casket to any one of my Liche Priests depending on the army list I am running.

One other thing you may notice is the Tomb Guards are not the models that came with the casket, instead they are just of the Skeletons that come with the chariot kit, with weapons and shields from the warriors it. I did this so that I could use the Casket Tomb Guard in the front ranks of my actual Tomb Guard unit. You will get to see pictures of this unit in a future blog post

With this model I now have a completely painted Tomb King army. I am in the process of photographing the whole army for a future post that will show case my Tomb Kings. As always, thank you for taking the time to read my blog. Please fell free to leave a comment.

Project Update: Tomb Kings Ushabti

I managed to get some painting in on Monday and with that time I chose to finish my Ushabti. I have always loved these models so I am very happy to finally have them completed and ready to roll with the rest of my army.

I stuck to the same paint scheme I have used through out my Tomb Kings army and even kept the bases a simple sand flock to make the whole army appear to be marching across a great desert.

In the second set you may notice the middle one's right hand looks horrible. Well I got the model for free in a Bits trade and it was already a mess. I painted it the best I could so hopefully it will blend in. Lucky for me I only run a unit of 4 so it will just stay in my case unless needed :)

I also tried something new with my photos. My past images have been pretty crappy due to poor lighting for my photo box. Well today I went to grab the box and my cat decided to play in the garage and knocked it off its shelf. Until I can build a new one I decided to just use natural daylight and my back patio. I don't think it looks that bad, but it was pretty overcast today.

Well that is all I have for today, as always thanks for stopping by and please feel free to comment.

Project Update: Tomb Kings Carrion

This week I got a little free time so I painted up my Carrion. They were pretty interesting models to paint. They are loaded with details and I just loved the muscle and sinew look of the wings. It was a little tricky to paint though but with some experimentation I found what worked for me.

First the models were primed white. I think painted on a watered down layer of Scab Red, 60/40 paint to water. Once that was dry, I dry-brushed a few coats of dwarf flesh, then for my final few layers I dry-brushed on rotting flesh. That finished up all the gory parts. For the feathers I base-coated with black then dry-brushed codex gray. For the bone I used bleached bone with a gryphonne sepia wash.

Over all I am happy with how they turned out. This leaves me just my Ushabti and the Casket of Souls and the Tomb Kings will be complete! As always thanks for reading and any comments are welcome.

Project Update: Tomb Kings and a Dwarf!

Well this was a nice week of painting for me and Fantasy Battles. I managed to get 3 characters done and thus push two armies closer to completion.

First up is my Dwarf Battle Standard Bearer. I have been holding onto the model forever. I love the model as it is very characterful. I enjoyed painting him and I can't wait to see him on the battlefield. Of all the GW Standards Bearers, this has got to be my all-time favorite and it was a joy to get him painted.

Next up came my Tomb Kings Icon Bearer. I have yet to use this guy in an army list but now that he is painted I may just have to give him a go. I stuck with the same painting scheme as the rest of my Tomb Kings and I am very pleased with the over-all outcome of the mini.

Finally the last model I completed this week is my Queen Khalida model. I like this model and in my army I use her as a Liche Priestess usually placed with my Casket of Souls.

With the completion of her and my Icon Bearer the Tomb King army is very, very close to completion

Well that is all for now, I am off to paint more Dwarfs. As always all comments and suggestions are welcomed. Thanks for taking the time to read The Winds of Magic!

Casket of Souls - Is it worth taking?

I am getting ever closer to having my entire Tomb King army painted, and as I get closer I have started looking at models I have never or rarely ever fielded. The top of that list is my Casket of Souls. So I started to ask myself why I never use the Casket. Well in the past my answer has been simple, it costs 165 points, it can't move and it uses up a rare slot on my roster. Those 3 reasons alone have kept me from using one for many years now.

Well now that I am getting close to painting the model I started to look into ways that I could make the Casket more useful to me. Then I started reading the rules to the Casket more closely. First thing I noticed is that it can be taken as an upgrade for a regular Liche Priest. I have no idea why but ever since I started playing the army I thought it had to be taken by a Liche High Priest, which I never use. This really got me interested in taking one, but how will it help my army?

Well first off the whole unit (casket, liche priest and guards) count as a war machine and crew. This means added protection from shooting as the hits must be randomized against the war machine and crew. This manes on a D6 roll the crew are only taking a hit on a 5/6. Then this gets further randomized between the crew and the liche priest. Furthermore unlike regular war machines the Casket itself ignores any hits against it.

Ok so protection from enemy fire is pretty good but what about from a charge. Well first and foremost the casket and crew cause Terror, so any wanna-be charges will need to pass a leadership test first. Then the crew themselves are basically Tomb Guards, only they have 2 attacks instead of 1 and come complete with Tomb Blades (killing blow).

The casket power, called The Light of Death, is just full of potential. If you take your time and place your Casket effectively you will be able to effect the majority, if not every unit in the enemies army. The power works on every enemy unit that has line of sight to the casket. This means that you have the potential to cause wounds with no armor save to every unit in their army every turn. The casket even have some anti-magic use for as long as it is on the table enemy wizards take a negative to their casting.

All of that is pretty great as it is, but the biggest advantage I realized is that most players will not just ignore the casket and will save some dispel dice to deal with it. This means that my Lich Priests and Tomb king will have more of their magic getting through to better supplement the army. I think this was the final selling point for me.

I know that my latest Tomb King list now has a Casket of Souls in it. I hope I have made some good points for other generals who are debating on fielding one. I would love to hear any feedback on the use of a casket in a Tomb Kings arrmy.

Friday Project Update: 23 Oct 09

Just a quick projects update. This week it has been all fantasy for me when I have had time to paint. I managed to finish off my Liche Priest that I will be using as my Heirophant. This is actually the model that came the the Casket of Souls. I think he is wicked looking so I use him as my Heirophant.

I also managed to complete my Tomb King mounted in a chariot. I made my of Flail of Skulls for him but using a flail from the Chaos marauders along with some skulls from my Vampire Counts.

I was also working on my Bone Giant but did not get him finished in time for this post. Also i am sorry the pics are poor quality, my camera batteries died and I was stuck using my wife's camera which I suck at using.

Next up are some Dwarf Thunderers, and more than likely more Tomb Kings, as I try to finish off my Tomb Kings and Dwarf armies.

Friday Project Update - Tomb Kings

Since my family was visiting I had a slow week of painting but I did manage to get some minis painted. To the left you can see my mounted Liche Priest. He was actually pretty easy to paint and I should not have delayed in painting him for as long as I did. In my army he runs with some mounted archers and is a harassing unit, but if he is need to rez troops he has the speed to get back into range where he can be useful.

The unit to the right is a 20 strong group of Skeletal Bowmen. This unit was a fully painted unit of Spear men, I spent the week removing their spear arms and their shields. I then attached the archer arms. Once that was done I just had to paint the new pieces and my new unit was ready to go to war.

Well that is all for this weeks update. I am currently working on finishing up my Chaos Terminator Lord and should have pictures of him for tomorrow's post. Thanks for taking the time to read my blog, all comments are welcome.
