Project Update: Warmachine, Goblins, and a Rhino

Today is just a day of posting some finished projects. First up is for my all Goblin list I am trying to get painted in time for the Alamo GT. This a unit of Night Goblin Squigg Riders that I have named da" Nutters.

Next is my second unit of Exemplar Errants for my 35pt tier 3 Kreoss list for Menoth in the Warmachine game system.

Continuing with my Kreoss list, up next is my solo, an Exemplar Seneschal.

Last up is my first Rhino for the Imperial Fists. I was really nervous about painting my first yellow vehicle and it was difficult. Covering up mistakes became the biggest problems, but over all I feel like the end result was worth it.

Project Update: IG Tanks and Heavy Weapons

Project Update: Warmachine and Malifaux

Just another quick update with some models I completed over the last few days. First up for my buddy Mike's Cygnar Army is Captain Jeremiah Kraye. This model was very detailed and fun to paint.

Next up is some of my own Warmachine models. A full unit of Exemplar Errants. They are some highly detailed models and it was a blast painting them.

The final model for this post is my 2nd Malifaux model I have painted. The more I get done the more I want to get into this game! Anyway here is my Steamborg - Executioner Class.

Project Update: Ragnar Blackmane, Imperial Fists and Chaos

Not to big a post today just a few more models that I have completed recently.

First up is Ragnar Blackmane for my Space Wolves. I plan on running a full drop pod list with Ragnar strictly because it is fluffy.

Ragnar is my favorite character and I tried to paint him like he looks on the cover of the Space Wolf Omnibus including the lone Fenris wolf which I have name Firmir.

Updating the paint job on my Space Wolves is coming along nicely so I decided to drill out the gun barrels in the process and over all I am happy with the results. Not sure how much longer the updating is going to take but it is worth it as it is making the army look more unified.

Next up on the list is a group of Possessed Chaos Space Marines. Theses guys were fun to paint and with their completion I have finished my Chaos Marine commission for my buddy Brandon.

Last but not least are more of my models. The Imperial Fists 3rd Company, 2nd Tactical Squad. I plan on working more and more on this army as I finish other projects so more Imperial Fists will be popping up as time goes on. I am really happy with how they are turning out.

Well that is just about it for now. I have added some gobbos to my Orcs and Goblins page but as they are not new paint jobs just updating the bases so the army looks the same, I didn't include their pics in the post, but feel free to check out the page.

Sisters of Battle White Dwarf Codex Review

I got my complete set of Sisters of Battle rules from White Dwarf and I have had a week or so of reading it and build lists, so I thought I would go ahead and give my review of it.

My first thought is that over all it is a pretty good update for one given in a White Dwarf. It is a little low on background and history, but it had more than I expected it to have.

The thing that excited me the most is the fact it is a Sisters of Battle army again. I never liked the inquisition aspects of the old book and I am very happy to see this codex bring back what the Sisters should be, the army of the Ecclesiarchy.

Now that I have the basics out of the way lets get to the meat and potatoes, the Army List.

Army Special Rules:

Acts of Faith - This rule needed changes badly and I actually like the direction that GW decided to go. I like the fact that each unit has their own special Act of Faith and I like the system for getting the faith points. In most cases you should be able to get your act on a 4+ roll which is 50% of the time which is completely fair to me.

Independent Characters and Acts of Faith - Not much to say on this as I feel it works just like it should

Shield of Faith - Every single unit in the book gets a 6+ invulnerable save, I say YES!

Headquarters:

Canoness - Overall I am unimpressed with the Canoness. She is unremarkable in just about every way. Her point cost for what you get is crap. Why take a Canoness at 65 points then pay 25 more for a Rosarius when you can take a Confessor for 75 and get one for free. Anyway that is just my opinion I have one of each in my army list.

Sororitas Command Squad - If I take a Canoness I will be taking one of these with her just for the feel no pain if nothing else.

Ecclesiarchy Confessor - I love this HQ. I think you get allot for the points and I just like the whole idea of the Confessor

Battle Conclave - If you are going to take a Confessor you might as well build him a decent conclave. I have one in my list.

Special Characters:

Saint Celestine - The most expensive of our HQs but if you have the points she is also the best of our HQs. I field her any chance I get. She is a deadly foe and I am not afraid to put her up against anything in the game and that continues in the edition of the codex.

Arch-Confessor Kyrinov - Well worth his points in wargear and special abilities alone.

Uriah Jacobus - Easily my second favorite of the special character. Point cost is reasonable and if you take a Canoness and him you get 2 units with feel no pain.

Elites:

Ecclesiarchy Priest - If you got extra points that you don't know where to put you can get a fairly good priest at a reasonable price.

Celestian Squad -Pretty decent squad 2 attacks is nice for the price. I don't have them in my current list but could easily see dropping a troop squad for one of these.

Repentia Squad - One of three units in the army that got much needed improvements. Feel no pain, fearless, fleet rage, shield of faith spirit of the martyr what doesn't this unit have? I have one in my list and am considering buying a second unit.

Troops:

Battle Sister Squad - our quintessential and only troops choice, the battle sister still are the core of the army and still a very effective mid range shooter unit. I run 4 squads of 10 with various weapon load outs to handle the most variety of enemies.

Dedicated Transports:

Rhino - Its a Rhino, but you get some Sisters of Battle upgrades. I run a mostly foot list so I don't use mine often.

Immolator - Pretty much the same. People are complaining but someone always will. I am running one with my Canoness and one with my Retributor Squad.

Fast Attack:

Seraphim Squad - another unit I thought got some good improvement. Their special rules are pretty cool. I love hit and run. I love re-rolling acts of faith but my favorite is allowing the Seraphim to choose to frie both pistols instead of being twin linked.

Dominion Squad - SCOUTS this is huge for me anyway. I now think this is one of the most useful units in the game and will almost always field a unit. I really feel this unit got upgraded with this update.

Heavy Support:

Retributor Squad - I love them as I always have. Pleny of different loadouts for what ever role you need them for.

Exorcist - You should have one, I want two. Easily our best Heavy. AP1 loving it!

Penitent Engine - The Special rules really upped this uint in my opinion, rage, battle frenzy, unstoppable rampage and shield of faith yes I am fielding two of these big boys.

Final Thoughts:

Overall I am impressed by the codex. It feels pretty streamlined and at times it felt like I had very few options but as I looked at it they basically removed allot of the crap I never used anyway. I think it is a decent codex for a White Dwarf release. Is it the next power house dex? No! Can an experienced
Sister of Battle player win with this book? Absolutely!

Project Update: First Malifaus Mini and First attempt at OSL!

Well I have finally gotten around to painting my first Malifaux miniature, Ramos, Steampunk Sorcerer. Not only was this my first Malifaux model I have ever painted, it was also my first attempt at Origin Source Lighting (OSL). I am happy with my results but the pics are of poorer quality than I would have liked to show it off.

I followed several tutorials online and tried to best mimic the effects I saw. Like I said I am happy with the results but would love some feedback on what I have done wrong or could do better.

Over all I love the miniatures for Malifaux and I really need to get more games in as I am a huge novice, but want to play much more of this game. I plan on collecting the rest of Ramos' force the moving onto the Cult of December as those minis are pretty amazing.

Project Update: Sisters of Battle Exorcist

Well after a few years of sitting primed on my painting desk, staring at me as I painted other minis, my Exorcist has had the sole focus of my last two days of painting.

It is a beautiful model and now that it is painted I am regretful to have left it sit for so long.

This will almost complete my collection of Sister of Battle, but I have a few additions I hope to make in the future due to the new White Dwarf Codex.

I just about have all the models for a Canoness' retinue as well as a Confessor and Retinue, so once those are collected and painted I will be done painting Sisters of Battle, anyway on to the other Exorcist pics.

Project Update: IG Command and Cygnar Field Mechaniks

Well just a quick up date with some of what I have finished painting lately. First up is my buddy Scott's IG Company Command Squad. I have stuck with the agreed paint scheme so really not a whole lot different then everything else I have painted thus far for this large commission.

Next up is the first of Scott's Commissars. He chose the color scheme for these guys, and at first I wasn't so sure but after painting his first one I think it looks pretty good and so the rest will get the same treatment.

Next are for my Buddy Mike's Cygnar Commission. Above and below you will find two units of Cygnar Field Mechaniks. These guys were pretty fun to paint as they are so completely different from all the other Cygnar stuff.

Well that is it for what I have painted this past weekend. The Cygnar and Chaos Marines commissions are close to being finished, but I still have a long way to go with the IG. More of my own models coming up soon.

Project Update: IG and Space Wolves

Well I got some more updates ready for things I have been working on. First up is going to be more of Scott's Imperial Guard. The platoon command and 3 Tanks to go with what I have painted so far.

I am not big on posting lists because I mainly play for fun. I am considering going to the Alamo GT this year if I can swing it so I thought I would throw my list I have been playing around with out there and get a few opinions.

Dark Angels: Planning the Army.

Well yesterday I announced that I was officially starting to collect a Dark Angels army. Well today I have been playing around with the type of army I wanted to build so that I could start planning my collection list.

Well I know that I don't want to do a specialized list like the Death Wing or the Raven Wing. With that said I really want want an all purpose army that can incorporate any unit from the codex.

So here is my initial concept. I am going to collect the entire 4th company, with no other reason than I like their heraldry. This means I will need some command guys as well as 6 Tactical Squads, 2 Assault Squads, 2 Devastator Squads, Rhinos and 2 Dreads.

Next up I will want some Death Wing so I am thinking 20 or so Terminators in various degrees of kit. I am not sure about doing Master Belial and a command squad, but I can always add later if I want him.

I will want Raven Wing and I am thinking 2 full squads and then a few support speeders. Again I am not sure Master Sammael but I can always pick him up later also. I will add in 10 Scouts just to have them and then a few heavy vehicles.

So that is the plan, next time I am going to post my model list and then start updating it like I did with my Imperial Fists. Any comments or suggestion from you Dark Angels players out there is greatly appreciated.

Next Project: Dark Angels

Well about two years ago I started collecting my 3rd Chapter of Space Marines, Imperial Fists. In that time I now have almost enough models to make the entire 3rd Company.

Now it is time to start collecting for my 4th and Final Space Marine Chapter I want to collect. The Dark Angels. I plan on doing them much like I did the Fists, just slowly picking up pieces through trading and when I have the extra cash.

So far I have managed a small collection to include Forge World Dark Angels Dreadnought. Both of the styles of Captains, Interrogator Chaplain in Terminator Armor, Librarian, Two Death Watch Terminators and 3 Veteran Sgts. Not a bad start so far. I will post more in the future as I start this new army!

Project Update: IG, Chaos, Templars

Well this past couple days have seen a painting frenzy from me. I managed to work on two separate commissions as well as as a couple of my own models. First up is High Marshal Helbrecht. I also painted a Neophyte Standard bearer but I didn't take a pic, though I will make sure one gets posted to the army page.

Next up is the 1st Platoon, 2nd Squad, for his Imperial Guard army I am painting. Company Command as well as Platoon Command are almost finished and should make the next post on projects.

Next up are some of the Choas models I have been working on for a large Chaos Project. I am down to 5 Possessed Models and that will finish that commission. First is a Tzeentch Sorcerer Lord

Next up is a squad of 10 Chaos Terminators!

Black Templars Vs. Dark Eldar 1500 points

Today my buddy Scott wanted to try out his newly purchased Dark Eldar force. I hadn't played 40K in awhile and my Black Templars in even longer so I was more than willing to give it a go.

The battle was Annilation with the Spearhead deployment. Scott got first turn and I failed to seize initiative. I knew I needed to survive the first round and get lucky with my Drop pod reserves or this was going to be a long day. I managed to make it through the first round and even did well in my phase, losing only 3 Assault marines compared to his loss of 6 Scourges and a unit of Warriors and a loss of his Dark Lance off of his raider.

Unfortunately my luck didn't hold up as neither drop pod showed up in round 2 leaving High Marshal Helbrect and his command group and the Emperor's Champion and his Marines stuck in space and out of the battle.

Scott wasted no time capitalizing on my misfortune and with just shooting managed to finish my two small Crusade Squads sheltered in building as well as knocking oout my Land Speeder Typhoon (Melta/Heavy Flamer).

Turn 3 saw both drop pods show up for much needed support and through shooting I was able to kill off half a unit of Wyches and half a unit of Hellions. His Succubus Tried to assault my dreadnought with a grenade but failed. I caused a wound in return, but she negated it with an invulnerable save.

Turn 4 saw Helbrect and his squad attack the remaining Wyches and Hellions, killing off the Hellions and a few more Wyches, but they held their ground. The Emperor's Champion and unit attacked the now lanceless Raider destroying it and 6 of it passengers with a nice power fist attack. The Dreadnought killed the Succubus.

Turn 5 Saw my dread dying to Ravanger fire in the rear armor and the Emperor's Champion and unit shot to pieces by the other Hellion group. Finally though Helbrect and his team finished off the Wyches, but it was too little too late the battle came to a close and I lost 8 to 7 victory points.

All in all it was a fun game and I learned I really like the new Dark Eldar, and I think Scott likes his new army as well.. Slide show below of some of the pictures I took during the game!.

High Elf Test Model and 1st Tactical, 3rd Company Imperial Fists

First up today is my test model for my High Elves. I am not a big fan of the standard white and blue of the high elves. I have decided to instead go with more of a burgundy red and white scheme instead.

I am really happy with the result and I can't wait to see the rest of my army as it comes together. Right now I have a pretty small force consisting of the Isle of Blood miniatures as well as the Dragon kit which I plan on running as a Dragon Mage.

Soon I hope to pick up the Battalion box set as well as a box of Silver Helms, so that should make a pretty decent start to my army. Which is the last Warhammer Fantasy army I plan on collecting, so I really want to do it proud and get a perfect looking paint job on it.

Next up is the first unit I have finished from a project I started collecting about two years ago. I present to you my Imperial Fists, 3rd Battle Company, 1st Tactical Squad. I was dreading painting the yellow but I am very happy with the results of this unit and now I just want to dive into more, but I have some other projects that need my attention first.

Project Updates: Squire and Chaos Terminators

Well over the last two days I have managed to get some of the commission work for two of my friends completed. First up is the Squire Solo mini-jack for my buddy Shane's Cygnar army.

I don't play Cygnar so I am not sure how useful this little guy is but he was pretty fun to paint. Shane gave me the last of his minis over the weekend, so I should be able to tie up this commission work fairly soon. I have mostly some single models to paint for him and I think two smaller units.

Once I am able to finish off his Cygnar stuff I will be back to painting my Protectorate of Menoth and hopefully getting some more games under my belt.

Next up is some more commission work for my buddy Brandon. I have a pretty decent sized project for him which I have already completed and sent out two units so far. Next up were ten Chaos Terminators. You can see the top five above and the remaining five will be below.

Brandon is always fun to paint for because he gives me his thoughts and then just lets me go with it. For these ten terminators he wanted the a red color, but he did not what the red and brass of Khorne. I went with a ruddy brown primer, which I then dry-brushed beaten copper over for a pretty cool looking metallic armor. I then did the piping and helmets in silver, some other icons in bronze and all the weapons are mostly boltgun metal. After the initial colors I then went back and used various washes to dull down the metals and really give the models a gritty look.

Hopefully Brandon is as happy with the results as I am.

Up on my painting desk right now are the next ten Chaos Terminators for Brandon. He wanted these guys to be mostly white with blue as their secondary color. I think this is going to be challenging, but at the same time allot of fun. I hope to get the next unit completed by this weekend.

My First Citadel Finecast: Tomb King Liche Priest

Well today I broke down and bought my very first Citadel Finecast model, The Liche Priest for my Tomb Kings army.

The first thing I am happy to report is that my model had no warping or bubbles. There was a little flash but it cleaned up very easily with my hobby knife. The mold lines were almost none existent.

Over all the detail is great and I don't think it would look as good in metal, but when I purchased it today I got to compare it to the new Vampire Counts Cairn Wraith and Tomb Banshee, both of which are highly detailed, made of plastic and cost less.

Now what does concern me is the model does not feel very sturdy. I mean I expected it to be less sturdy than metal, but this feels more flimsy than some of my plastic skeletons from the same army. I am hoping that since the material gives more than plastic this will allow him to hold up to the strain of gaming.

In the end I am pretty happy with my purchase. I got a good model that didn't have any of the problems that are frequently put out there about finecast. It was a little more expensive than I feel it should be, but it looks like it will be a joy to paint and will fit very nicely in my Tomb Kings army.

Project Update: Storm Smith & Storm Tower

I just finished this Storm Smith with a Storm Tower for my buddy Shane's Cygnar army. This was a fun set to paint as the models were fairly detailed. I kept to the primary colors he has for his army and just went to town.

I really need to finish up his Cygnar because I am getting the itch to paint my Protectorate of Menoth which has fallen sorely behind.

Tomb Priest with Cloak of Dunes

To the left you can see my scratch built Tomb Priest with Cloak of Dunes. This is my first attempt using this much green stuff. I usually use it for little add-ons here and there but as you can see over half of the models is Green Stuff.

I first placed a clear flying rod (upside down so the thick end was at the top) onto a 20mm square base. I then built of the ground and slowly built up the sand devil that the Tomb Priest would be carried upon. I let the green stuff cure for about 20 mins. I then came back and began sculpting in the rings to make the Sand Devil come to life.

After letting the Green Stuff cure for a few hours, I began to assemble the remaining pieces for the model. I got the body and left arm as well as some of the flying scarabs, from left over bits from my Necrosphinx. The death mask, staff and remaining scarabs came for bits left over from my Sepulchral Stalkers kit.

Overall, I am very pleased with how this model turned out. I liked the idea of the Cloak of Dunes turning the priests lower half into a small sand storm and that is where it gets the fly ability. I really like how I was able to make it look like the scarabs were sucked up into the storm and are flying out from where ever they can to make their escape. I know other out there in the blogosphere could do much better, but I will not improve if I don't get practice and I am pretty happy with my first larger scale effort with Green Stuff.

Well let me know what you think of my little project. I will post the finished product up once I have him all painted up.

New Vampire Counts Rules: My Opinions

So earlier in the week I gave my opinions on the first half of the New Sisters of Battle Codex. Well today I am going to do the same for the new Vampire Counts Official Rules additions found in the same White Dwarf.

First up we have the new Terrorgheist. This is a beautiful model but it is also the kit for the Zombie dragon so I will have to buy two of them :-(. THe rules are very cool for this model. It is a mount for a Ghoul King which is any Vampire that has taken the Ghoulkin Vampiric Power. It is a Monstrous mount so in addition to all of its normal attacks it get a Thunder Stomp at the end. It has an ability called Death Shriek a nice amount of attacks as well as wounds. I have been planning a Ghoul army for awhile now and this baby is giving me the incentive I need to get started on it ASAP. It also has upgrades in the form of Infested, which causes damage to enemy units if the Terrorgheist is destroyed. It also can buy Rancid Maw wihich upgrades its attacks to poison.

In my opinion I really like the Terrorgheist, and I definitely see one in my future, the Zombie Dragon must come first though.

Next up comes a new hero choice for the Vampire Counts, the Tomb Banshee. I am really excited about the option of taking heroes other than Vampires in my army and the Tomb Banshee is a great option. Stat wise she is not that great but the fact she causes terror, is ethereal and has the Ghostly Howl which can be used in combat, makes her well worth it as a substitute hero for any Vampire Count force. I love the new model and I will surely have one of these running with one of my Skeletal units, maybe even my Skeleton horde.

Last up we have yet another Hero choice. The Cairn Wraith. I plan to run possibly two of these guys depending on the points I am playing. Again their stats are not great but they too make up for it with Ethereal, Terror and the Chill Grasp ability, although I am not sure giving up 2 attacks with a great weapon is worth one attack that auto wounds if it hits, but we shall see. I will be using this model with either my ghouls or skeletons or possibly both if I run two. Either way I think these are an excellent option if you don't wish to run numerous expensive Vampires.

Well there you have it. I think that the new rules are going to be very useful especially to players like myself who only want to run one or two Vampires. We now have some very useful option as hero choices and a very nice new mount for a Ghoul King. I think GW did an excellent job with these new units and I hope they continue on into the new Vampire Counts rulebook when ever it comes out.

Preliminary view on new Sisters of Battle

Well I have spent the weekend reading and re-reading my White Dwarf Sisters of Battle codex part one. It is hard to make any real judgements yet as the wargear and points cost won't be out till next month, but I will highlight some of the things I do like.

I for one like the new Acts of Faith. I know others have stated they don't like them but for me I think they are pretty great and a real improvement over last editions.

I like the fact that they added the Sister Dialogus and Hospitaller as part of a Sororitas Command Squad, I just need to know what their gear is going to do.

I like the idea of Priests with Battle Conclaves but again until I see the points cost, I don't know how useful it will be.

I love the changes to the Repentia, Feel No Pain is going to be a great addition. I have always used them in the past and will continue to do so in the future.

I love the changes to Penitent Engines, the unstoppable rampage and battle frenzy are cool and they Get the Shield of Faith.

I love the Special Characters but again until I see the points cost it will be hard to determine their worth, but I will be picking up Arch-Confessor Kyrinov and Uriah Jacobs and adding them to the army.

The rest of the units are pretty good as well, but like I have stated already, without war-gear and points cost it is difficult to really decide on their worth.

That is all for now. Over all I like what I see but I have concerns on points. I will post a follow up article when the second half of the rules comes out next month.

I just have a quick update today to show my latest finished group of models. I am having fun painting up the Space Wolves, but this will probably be the last unit I do for a little bit. A good friend of mine needs 20 Chaos Terminators and a few other models painted so I will be once again painting other people's minis while mine sit. I really need to learn how to say no. After that is finished I will be moving back to my Orcs and Gobbos, so it may be quite awhile before more of my Space Wolves show up on the blog.

Project Update: More Space Wolves

Between yesterday and today I was able to finish 3 more units of my Space Wolves. What began as a distraction from painting Orcs and Goblins has quickly become my new obsession, lucky for me it won't last too long as I don't yet own everything I need to run my Ragnar Blackmane all Drop Pod list. I have plenty of Space Wolves but I am lacking the 8 Drop Pods I need. Luckily by next week I will have 3, including a Forge World Dreadnought Pod.

First up we have two more units of Grey Hunters. This puts me at a total of 3 units of 6 so I will probably do some more Blood Claws next to endure I have all of my troops I have in my list covered.

All 3 of my Grey Hunter units have different pack marking on their shoulder pads so I will easily be able to tell them apart on the battle field. I also tried to kit each one slightly differently so that each could do multiple roles if needed. All 3 will have a Wolf Guard in their ranks as well to even more diversify each units combat effectiveness.

I have plenty more Grey Hunters to go around so I can add to unit strength or even add a new unit if I decide the list needs some minor tweaking.

Last up today is my first Long Fang Squad. This unit can do multi-purpose shooting with 2 Meltas and 2 Missile Launchers. I will be fielding a second unit that will either field 4 Missiles or 3 Missles and a Las Cannon.

After the Battle: Questions for other O&G players

I had a really great game of WHFB yesterday even though I lost. The points limit was 2500 and I played an all goblin list against my buddy Scott's Ogres. The battle was a blast as the momentum kept swinging back and forth between each army for most of the game. In the end my gobbos were just not strong enough to defeat the ogres but I was happy with how they performed and with a few better dice rolls the game would have went the other way.

I tried 3 new units that I have not used before in the game. My Arachnorock spider, a unit of 10 Squigg Hoppers joined by a tooled up big boss on a giant squigg and 2 Mangler Squigg units. This is where my questions for the other Orcs and Goblins players come in.

My Arachnorock did very well. It was the basic model no additions, and it munched on a unit of Leadbelchers doing tons of damage and then finally running the sole survivor down as he fled. Unfortunately this left him open to a charge from a unit of bulls. The combat was fierce on both side but when it came time for my thunderstomp I managed to roll a 1 for the number of hits and then another 1 for the damage. In the end I lost combat due to ranks and banner and ended up running off the table.

So my question here is should I use the Arachnorock as more of a support charger trying to get flanks and such or do I continue to use it solo and just risk the ranks and banner bonuses that my enemies unit is going to get.?

Next up is my Squigg Hoppers. These guys did great and tore up the units on the right flank (2 different units of Leadbelchers). But then I needed them in the center and because of bad rolling for their 3d6 movement by the time they got their it was too late to help.

So how do you other O&G players use the Hoppers? I was using them to guard a flank which they did beautifully but then afterwards they just couldn't do any more for me. Should I keep them more in the center of the line and throw them at tough units? I like these guys but I am not sure I am using them correctly.

Lastly I have my 2 units of mangler squiggs. I just have no idea what I did wrong with these guys. Ok I know what I did wrong with the first unit. I let it get into line of sight with some Leadbelchers :-( but the 2nd one suffered from the same problem I had with the hoppers. Poor rolling for the 3d6 movement kept them out of the action for the entire game. I am considering only taking one next time if I use them again at all.

So that is my 3rd and final question what are the Mangler Squiggs good for? I placed on of mine in the center of the line and the other on the right flank. The one in the center got shot to pieces in turn 2, the one on the right flank never saw any action. I could really use some advice on these guys as I really think it is a cool unit and I am having fun modelling up my own for the task.

Before I go, I did want to mention 2 of my most outstanding units. These units have performed well in every game I have used them in. They would be my 40 strong Night Goblin horde with netters and 3 fanatics and my 20 strong Squigg Herd unit. I always throw the Night Goblin horde right into the middle and let it cause as much havoc as it can for as long as it can while my other units either support it or carry onto their own targets. My Squigg herd is just a great damage dealing unit and I am seriously considering adding another one to my army. I have the squiggs I just need to model up some handlers.

Well that is all I have. I just had a blast playing yesterday, but it also left me with some questions on how to use some units. So if you play O&G please feel free to give me some feedback on the units I mentioned or just on O&G in general.

Motivational Monday: Bag o' Dice!

Apples to Apples a really fun game!

Well I have recently played the Apples to Apples card game with some friends and I must say that I enjoyed it so much I went to the store the next day and purchased my own copy.

Now this game is a far cry from any of the gaming I blog about here, but it was so much fun I just had to post about it.

The game comes with everything you see in the picture to the left and can be played by 4-12 players. the recommended age is 12+ just due to some of the subject matter on the cards nothing risque or anything, just subjects younger kids might be lost on.

To play the game each player gets 7 or the red cards with the rest placed in the middle as the draw deck. Then you decide who is going to be the judge first. This rotates each hand afterwards to the currents judges left. The judge pick a card from the green deck with will usually have some kind of descriptive term like say "Smelly" and then it will have 3 other words further define what smelly means. The players then look at their red cards which have word or phrases along with pictures and a description that is usually pretty funny. Each player must play a card they think matches the green card. For instance if you had a red card with a "foot" on it you could play that. Once the players pick a card they give it face down to the judge and draw a new card from the pile.

This is where the fun starts. The judge then reads all of the cards and they decide which one best fits with the green card. The combinations can be quite funny and the judge can choose any car they want for what ever reason. I usually chose matches that made me laugh for instance in the game I played the word on the green card was "Innocent" and somebody threw out a red card with "Ninjas" on it. That was my choice because it made me laugh so hard!

Once the judge pics a card, the players state which card was theirs and the one who threw out the match keeps the green card. The player with the most green cards at the end is the winner, but at that point I really don't think any of us cared who won, we were having to much fun laughing at some of the silly combos.

Anyway I just wanted to do a quick review of what I think is a really fun game, which I can only imagine gets even better with some alcohol on-board. Yeah it doesn't have Space Marines or Dwarfs and Orcs but my friends, wife and myself had a blast for several hours and I am looking forward to the next time we play.

Sisters of Battle Update Rumors: What I think!

Well as you may have already heard the Sisters of Battle are getting a new "White Dwarf" codex. You can check out The Blood of Kittens article 1 and article 2 both of which have excellent information and TastyTaste is usually pretty accurate with his rumors.

Needless to say I am more than a little nervous about another White Dwarf release codex. The Blood Angel codex in White Dwarf was nothing to brag about so when I heard they were doing the same for my beloved Sisters I became nervous. Some of the Blood of Kitten rumors helped, but others have confirmed my concern.

So let me just tackle the rumors as listed on Blood of Kittens.

As always let us start with the easy ones that pretty much everyone figured was going to happen.

Allies gone
Inquisition gone
Faith streamlined
USRs updated to 5th
Cheaper Unit costs

I am completely fine with all of these. I never used allies and rarely used the Inquisition.

So let start with the big one and perhaps most controversial change to Sisters of Battle: Faith

I was amazed reading around the Net how quite a few people are pretty close to understanding how Faith is going to work. One caveat about the faith rules: I only have most of the story so let us hope someone else can pluck the rest from the aether. The only thing that really stays the same is only faith producing units can use faith. Gone is the over and under rules based on model count and gone is faith powers that everyone can use. It is replaced with every unit has its own unit specific act of faith to call upon.

So for instance Repentia Act of Faith allows them to always land an attack even if they are killed before they can swing. They are little bonuses like re-rolling to wound and hit, no USRs. Now this if fine and dandy if you just pop a faith point and bam! power goes off, but not so fast. Acts of Faith require that you roll 5+ to activate . This makes faith much more unreliable… maybe. In addition every unit that can get faith generates 1d6 faith points per turn. This also means that a new faith pool is generated each turn with no storing of past faith. As well faith can be activated in multiple phases of the game, so for instance you can re-roll to hit in your shooting phase or in your assault phase. What is not clear is a few things. Like how many dice can you throw at a single act of faith? How many times can you attempt to activated a power? If you get an act of faith to go off in one phase does it carry over to the next phase? If you fail an act of faith does that mean you cannot try again in another phase? I don’t have the answers, but what do you think?

While I completely agree that faith points needed some work I am not sure how I like this system. I do like some aspects of it but the 5+ to use doesn't leave a warm feeling. Maybe if different units had different values or if upgrading to Vet Sister Superior dropped you down to a 4+. I will just have to wait and see I guess.

Random tidbits

All Faith generating units get +6 invul save
All units that can get transports get Immolators or Rhinos
Assassins gone (Death Cult still in)
Wargear with the same names as GK wargear stay and get changed over. (e.g. Psybolt Ammo)
Karamazov gone
Priests in, pretty much same as before.
No change to the general Bolter, Melta, Flame concept of the Sisters

Again I am ok with with all of these except the Assassins. I really think Sisters should have access to them but I guess GW feels differently

Specifics

Sisters have about 5 HQ choices including Special Characters

Looking forward to seeing what Special Charcters there are.

St. Celestine: Same price as a Grand Master you get 2+/+4 saves, WS/BS 7 Jump Pack, Fleet, Power Weapons always wounds on 4+ Has the power to come back like GK Thawn if killed.

I really like the sound of this!

Confessor: Takes the slot of the old Inquisitors. Cheap HQ (Warboss). Can create a henchman band using most of the henchman found in the GK codex. EXCELLENT! I love Repentia and these changes sound very cool.

Battle Sister Squad: Cheaper 10-20 unit size (no combat squads), but has access to Immolators which begs the question… Immolators either get increased transport capacity or Sisters break the rules concerning model count and buying transports. Multiple acts of faith.

Interesting also curious to see if Immolators have an expanded transport capacity. If so I will never run Rhinos.

Exocists: Pretty much same as before.

Very excited to hear this as I love the Exorcist as it is!

Canoness: Here is my special shout out to the Canoness: you are terrible. I mean grossly underpowered. Now this is going to sound like a cop-op, but I am not going into details because my hope is that she will be changed before release. It just sounds and looks like she is an unfinished product. She gets her own retinue that cannot do anything; she starts out cheap, but her upgrades are expensive and lame when you compare to everything else. So here is hoping to GW getting her fixed.

I will be severely disappointed if the Canoness ends up a weak unit!

Repentia: Forgot to mention they have fleet

Excellent!

Celastians: Cheaper than a Marine, but not really anything going for them (that I know of)… extra attack. Re-roll hits for act of faith

I hope they have something extra because this sounds meh!

Sister Battle Squad: Can still get a Heavy Flamer

Good to know as I have them in every squad I own!

Shraphim: They are pretty amazing. Cheaper than a Space Marine you get a Jump Packing, Hit and Running, and an act of faith that has them re-rolling wounds. You can also upgrade them to run with double hand flamers and melta pistols. They act both as an extra close combat weapon and become assault 2 instead of being twin-linked. So that means Assault 2 melta weapons.

I love my Seraphim and I like where it sounds like the rules are going!

Dominion Squads: Still get 4 special weapons. Act of Faith twin-linked.

Good to know!

Retributor Squads: Pretty fantastic. CHEAP! Talking under Long Fang cheap to fully kit out. Expect the return of the Heavy Bolter with these. Act of Faith is Rending.

Cheap Retributors is again an excellent change I will look forward to.

Penitent Engines: Again fantastic. Same statline (Walker). No Scout or Infiltrate. Cheaper and can be a squadron aka 9 Engines. They still get the 1D6 attacks, but any wounds generate additional attacks (don’t know if they work like Blood Talons). 6+ Invul (don’t know if they generate faith)

Extremely happy that these are still in. The rules sound very cool and now I think I may just have to pick up another one so I can have a squadron of 3.

Project Updates: Imperial Guard 1st Squad

I just wanted to throw up a quick post to show the first squad I have painted for my Buddy Scott's Imperial Guard. I am painting them to match some models he already had done. I got the colors pretty darn close so now with the first squad done I will be pressing on.

Scott gave me well over 3k worth of Guard to paint and that is not including any vehicles. So this is going to be a long term project as he is in no hurry to get the army back. So you will be seeing some more Imperial Guard updates as I fit them in with my other projects.

MAY WAAAGH!: The Final Models

Well I know this post is a little late. I had family in for the first two wees of June and it really set back my hobby/blog posting time. Anyway, these are the final models I managed to finish in the May WAAGH! I really consider it a success as I got every Orc model I had that needed it got updated. I now only have about 80 Night Goblins to update and then I can start painting my new models for the army.

The bulk up my updating at the end of the WAAGH! was Savage Orcs. The first unit is my Savage Orc Boar Boyz

Next up are my two Savage Orc Shamans. I really enjoy the character on these guys. They just scream savage orcness to me. I really can't wait to paint up some of the new plastic Savage Orcs. I really wanted to strip these guys down and re-paint but I am fighting the urge as I already have a long queue of Orcs to paint so I stuck to my guns and just updated the look of the models as much as I could in the time I had allotted my self.

Last up on the finished models were my swarms of Snotlings, a Night Goblin Shaman and a Goblin Shaman. There wasn't much I could do with the Snotlings so I just re based them and called it a day. Both of my Shamans need some touch up paint and a green wash to bring out some detail. After that I just updated their bases to match the rest of the army and pressed on.

I will still be posting pics of my Orcs as I continue to finish them. I am really close to the end of updating models, then I will be posting all new freshly painted Orcs and Gobbos! I am hoping to be finished with the entire army by the end of summer and just in time for the Alamo GT which will be my first GT ever!!!.

Well, this brings an end to the May WAAGH! It was a blast for me and kept me focused on what needed to be done. I am very pleased with not only the results but the amount of models I was able to get finished. Thank you for stopping by and please feel free to leave me a comment.

Citadel Finecast: My Opinion

This is not a product review as I have yet to buy my own Finecast model, I am waiting for the Tomb King releases on the 11th. I just wanted to throw my opinion out there on how I feel about the models I have seen thus far.

The model above is the very first Finecast model I have seen out of it clam shell. I held it in my hands and looked it up and down. There has been quite a few posts on the blogosphere that say the quality of these miniatures suck, well from the one I held in my hand and the others I looked at on the shelves of my FLGS, my opinion is the complete opposite. I think that the Finecast models are stunning. The details are sharp and just the feel of the resin is high quality.

In my opinion, many of the vocal naysayers on the web are more angry about the prices and are putting down the quality of the models instead of just sticking to the issue they have a problem with. Like I have said many times on this blog before, I am not a tournament player, I am a hobbyist and as such I enjoy the painting aspect as much as building lists and playing the game. For me these models are amazing and I can't wait to get my first few to paint. Does the price increase suck? Sure it does, but I am willing to pay a few extra bucks for the quality of the miniatures I have seen thus far.

So to wrap this up before I ramble too long, don't rely on what you here on the blogosphere, including what I say here. Go out for yourself and have a look at the Citadel Finecast minis. Then make your own decision.

RPG: Dark Heresy

It has been nearly 5 years since I last played a Pen and Paper RPG. Being in the military it is sometimes hard to find and maintain a group. The last group I gamed with was fantastic, but slowly we all got orders to different parts of the world and I have just not found the motivation to start looking to play again.

All of that started to change as I began listening to back episodes of The Minions of the Monster Master podcast. Their original few episodes did two things for me. First and foremost it made me rememberall the things I loved about playing RPGs with a group of friends and to be honest it is something I miss greatly. The 2nd thing is they introduced me to the Dark Heresy RPG.

In the past I have always played mostly fantasy based RPGs and mostly Dungeons and Dragons at that. I even had the chance last year to get in on a D&D campaign that was just starting. I bought the 4th edition books and to be honest I just did not like the new rules so I decided not to play. Dark Heresy though has intrigued me; firstly because it is Sci-Fi and I haven't played a Sci-Fi RPG since I played Rifts while stationed in Alaska and that was over 10 years ago.Secondly, I read the entire core rule book and I love it. I love the character creation; it really feels like an in-depth system. So now I am in the process of trying to get a group together to play and it is looking like a real possibility around July this year.

So this will be another addition to the blog as I plan on writing about my experiences with the game. There is a chance I will be the GM so I am not sure how my posts will be if that is the case, but if I get to be a player I though it might be cool if I made posts as though my character was writing his experiences in a journal, but I will know more once I know for sure what I will be doing.

May WAAAGH!: More Updated Models

This was another good Waagh! week as I got a total of 5 units done which is actually about 35 models total. Just like my other updated models the paint job remains mostly the same I have just added touch ups where needed and washes. The main change to this minis is removing the old flock and putting on the new static grass.

First up is my Battle Standard Bearer. I really love this model because I think it has a ton of character.

The next two are my Orc Boar Chariots. Just your standard orc chariots, I don't think the model has even changed in the last 10 years.

Next up we have my Orc Boyz armed with spears and shields. I personally am really stating to like this unit in the new rules and I am considering buying more t make it a horde.

The last unit for this week is my Orc Boar Boyz. They are a hard hitting unit that makes an appearance in most of my lists. Yes they are still the old models, I have nothing against the new models I just see no need to replace these as I have other thing I want to spend the money on (New Tomb King models I don't own) so they will do for now.

May WAAAGH!: Latest Updated Models and a Spider!!!

WAAAGH! month has carried over into May and I am already glad I extended it. In the first two days I have gotten 5 models updated and built my Arachnarok. Up first is my Warboss, Grubak Skulzbusta on his Wyvern, Ironmaw. All I really had to do to get this model back in action was some touch ups where paint had chipped and then a green wash and devlan mud wash. Lastly I painted and flocked the base to match the rest of the army.

The second model I updated was my Goblin Wolf Chariot. Somewhere in my travels the banner goblin got lost; lucky for me I had the banner bearer for Ruglud's Armoured Orcs Regiment, so I used him to replace the lost one.

This model had many more chips and took a little longer to repair. After it was painted I followed up with the washes then painted and flocked the base to match.

I am looking to pick up at least two more of these little guys to run in my All Goblin Army, but I am really not looking forward to the all metal models :-(

The last three models I finished since May 1st are my Stone Trolls. I am really happy with how they turned out and all I did to get them ready was the Devlan Mud wash and then the bases. I may one day expand these out to six trolls but not before I get my River Trolls to that number.

It seems I have not assembled and readied a large enough horde for Grubak's liking; and since I am not dumb enough to argue with an Ork Warboss, I will have to extend the WAAAGH! and double my efforts or face the consequences that come from angering Grubak."

Unfortunately April has come and gone and I have got no where near what I wanted to accomplish with my Orc and Goblin army. I had a few things come up like some commission work for some friends and then moving the "Man Cave" out of the garage and into a spare room.

While I haven't done a whole lot with my models this month, I have played a bunch of games with my Greenskins and recently decided to attend the Alamo GT for Fantasy Battles. So I am going to be focusing on my Orcs and Goblins for another month to get as much of the models finished as possible.

Wow was all I could think as I read an email I received from Gyro (aka Mik) from Mik's Minis notifying me that he was giving my blog a 'Stylish Blogger Award'. Needless to say I am gracious and humbled that a great gamer, blogger and pod-caster like Gyro thinks my little blog deserves this honor.

The Stylish Blogger Award given from one blogger to another one might say, is like a pat on the back for a good job. It's definitely a viral, zombie-like spread of good will so it's too good to pass up. I was awarded mine earlier this week and now have the time to post about the award and those blogs that I wish to nominate.

First and foremost I have to thank Gyro of Mik's Minis for nominating me. He was one of my first followers when I opened up my blog originally called Extremis Diabolous and has been a constant source of inspiration as my blog has grown from an 40K blog to the gaming blog that it is now. His blog is such a great resource for all types of gaming and his blog combined with the Minions of the Monster Master podcast (Which Gyro is part of) have really opened my eyes to all of the various types of gaming there is. My favorite thing about Mik's Minis is you never know what you are going to get from one day to the next, but it is always something interesting. I have learned more about Legos than I could have possibly imagined, gotten food recipes, and seen info on games I never even knew existed. Seven Things About Me!

I am a Medic in the United States Air Force.
I have actually had my hand inside another mans chest and manually pumped his heart.
The name of my blog comes from my playing of RPGs not mini war-games :-)
I watched my very first Episode of Dr. Who last year and now I am hooked on it as well as Torchwood.
My favorite meal is Lemon Pepper Chicken with Garlic Mashed Potatoes and my wife's Zesty Green Beans.
GI Joes were my favorite toys as a kid.
The Original Dragonlance Trilogy are my favorite books of all time.

Ok now onto the blogs I am going to nominate. This was by no means easy as I follow a ton of great blogs, so I tried to limit myself to the blogs I frequent most often. These are in no particular order other than what popped into my head while writing this. Naturally I have already talked about Mik's Minis so I will leave it off this list but it definitely deserves to be there.

1. Order Minoris -Chris has a well rounded gaming site. While the blog's name might have a slight 40K lean don't let that fool you as I have found articles on WHFB, Malifaux and even boardgames and the Dark Hersey RPG. The blog looks clean and is easy to navigate, all big pluses for me.

2. Galaxy in Flames - Big Jim does an excellent job with his blog that specializes in 40K. It features everything from DIY rules and Fandexes to converting and painting. I make it to his site as often as I can just to see what is new and what else I can dig up in the archives.

3. diceRolla - Papa JJ runs an awesome gaming blog, besides how can you not love a blog when the owner describes himself as a sci-fi and fantasy nerd. Seriously though Papa JJ has a very well rounded gaming blog and his articles are top notch. He covers many topics and is a pretty darn good painter to boot. diceRolla is a must read on my blog roll.

4. Nesbet Miniatures - Painting, sculpting, converting, hobby tips, Nesbet has it all on his wonderful blog. Need I say more?

5. Inquisitor Lord Aki - Excellent 40k related gaming site with a crap ton of content. Home of The Basement Gamers Cookbook as well as info on campaigns, tactics and tutorials not to mention plenty of pics of minis.

6. Troll Tales - Troll tales is one of the best WHFB blogs out there. The site itself is beautiful and the content is amazing. My three favorite aspects are the painted mins, the tactics and the battle reports. This is a must see blog for all WHFB fans.

7. I See Lead People - Not only do I like the blogs catchy name but the content is pretty darn good as well. The crew at I See Lead People churn out articles on a large variety of topics including but not limited to war-gaming, terrain, and RPGs. If you don't follow their blog you are missing somethign special.

8. Musings of a Metal Mind - Mark is an incredible painter and to be honest I go to his site just to be blown away by the painting as well as get inspiration to become a better painter myself.

9. The Grumpy Stunty - Kuffeh runs another excellent WHFB blog as well a founding the Trading Post hub for all WHFB blogs. His blog is a really nice mix of painting and modelling mixed in with tactics and army discussions with some tutorial and hobby articles to add to the mix.

10. Drinkin' and Modelin' - What more needs to be said the blog title alone should make you want to read it. Seriously though Randroid has an amazing blog with plenty of articles on painting/modeling and even reviews of beers. It is well worth checking out!

Well that concludes my list of blogs that I consider worthy of the 'Stylish Blogger Award'. I couldn't get past 10 because there are just so many excellent blogs I follow and it was hard enough deciding on the ten above over others. Crazy Dice!!!

My buddy and I were playing a game of WHFB today, his Ogres against my Orcs and Gobbos. He was crushing my army the first two turns until one of his dice ended up like the picture to the left.

The fact that the dice landed and stayed in that position was pretty funny in and of itself, but what happened afterward is truly hilarious. His dice just completely abandoned him afterward. I was able to pull off a close victory thanks to his bad rolls and me making 4 different snake eyes leadership rolls at opportune times in the game.

The game was still a total blast and it confirmed to me that I will always have a 40 strong night goblin mob with netters and max fanatics. This unit has yet to let me down in a game. I also used Gitilla Da Hunter and Da Howlers; they managed to take down the giant with their bow shots.

The Ogres are a really hard nut to crack, and playing my buddy a few times now, I am starting to get Ogre fever so I may be doing a new Fantasy Army in the future.

My new Man Cave!!!

Well last week my 19 year old daughter decided that it was time to leave the nest. I was a little down with that news as she is the first of my children to leave but I was glad to see her taking her life into her own hands. Then my wife really improved my mood when she asked me if I would like to move my man cave from the garage into the now vacant bedroom. "Hell Yeah" was my reply. We are already hitting the 90's in South Texas and I was not looking forward to hobby time in the over 100 degree San Antonio summer. So I have spent the last few days moving into my new Man Cave.

The room itself is not huge by any means, but I was easily able to get my 6X4 foot gaming table to fit in as well as some shelving for unfinished minis and a painting desk. All of my hobby stuff fit in the closet including all of my terrain as well as my city fight board.

I was able to hang up my Notre Dame fathead stickers and still have room for some gaming posters first of which will be the RIFT MMORPG poster that came with the game. I will just need to pick up a few other posters to give the cave walls sufficient decor.

Well I hope you have enjoyed this little look at my new man cave, I know I am looking forward to being able to have hobby time in the sweet air-conditioning of the house.

I don't like some of the poses at all and this really made it take longer to paint the unit as I just wasn't into them. I am hoping the new Plastic/Resin set has better poses. April WAAAHG! : 2nd unit of Boyz and Orc Shaman Updated

So April is almost half over and my painting progress has not been stellar on my O&G, but I have assembled all the kits I hadn't taken out of the boxes yet and got another unit of my of my old Orcs updated with some washes and new bases as well as a new movement tray to go with them.

Like the last unit this ones shows my painting skill from about 10 years ago, but I was able to get it looking better so that it will more easily fit in with the new models I will be painting.
I also got my Orc Shaman finished with the updating as well. One of the big reason I got behind is I have actually been playing my Orcs and Gobbos and so far they are running at 50% win/loss ratio. I have also posted my Orc and Gobbo page where I will be posting the pictures of the entire army once it is finished, it can be found here!

And then the tsunami that hit Japan...seeing the footage of that wave gave me the chills and I have not been able to revisit it, realizing how much carnage and hardship this wave caused...

We cannot change any of these things by ourselves. But we can help support organizations that go to Africa and Japan, people that risk their own lives to better the life of a stranger. One of these groups is Doctor without Borders. An amazing organization and I am asking you all to check out their news feed here.

Well, this year the world seems way worse off and we have decided to do another Charity Project:
Heroes of Armageddon

John and I thought it better to raise the stakes and create a much larger project: we're giving away FOUR 3000 point armies. We hope that you will all pitch in and let your heart speak. This is the change we all can make, instead of ignoring the news.

How does it work?

Every dollar that you support the project with gives you a chance to be one of the lucky four at the end of this drive. So 10 dollars of donations buys you 10 chances. 100 dollars means....right, you got it.
At the end of the drive, in July, we will randomly choose the winners.
Then, the armies will travel to Games Day in Chicago, where they will be displayed. After that the winners can take their army home or we send it off.
In short: the more you donate, the better your chances. More importantly, the more you donate, the more you help all of us to make the world a better place.

Heroes of Armageddon
Our Games Day Diorama will depict the 3rd battle of Armageddon with 4 armies: Steel Legion, Blood Angels, Ork Hordes and Speed Freaks.
We have expanded the all star build team from last year with a handful of Golden Demon winners and we also hope to go bigger and better by reaching out to more of you and the industry and collecting even more than we did last year for Doctors Without Borders.

Through these guys, we have been able to lock down 3 Golden Demon winners to paint the centerpieces of the armies and have created a total build team of close to 20 to 25 people, all of which are wonderful artists and gracious with time and effort for this cause. April WAAAGH! First Boyz Unit Finished

This is my first post for the April Waaagh! This is a unit of Orc Boyz I painted over 10 years ago. I know my painting skills have improved much since then so I tried to make some changes to these models so they would look like they fit in with the newer models I will be painting.

The first thing I did was scrape all of the old, green sawdust flock off the bases of the models. Next I proceeded to touch up any areas that I noticed that needed fixing. Once that was done I did a moderate wash of Thraka Green over all the skin to bring out more of the details. Next I painted the bases from green to black. Once all the painting was done I sprayed the models with sealer and then flocked the bases with scorched earth static grass. The last step will be when I flock the movement tray with the same static grass, but I plan on doing all of my movement trays at the same time so this one hasn't been done yet.

I know the models still show their age and the painting isn't perfect, but I am happy with the results and this process will keep me from painting about 150 or so models. I have already started on a 2nd group of boyz as this updating process needs to get finished before I move onto painting my new models.

Organizing My Hobby Time

When it comes to my miniature gaming hobby I love playing the games, but when it comes down to it I find I am a collector. What do I mean by this is basically I collect armies and never really focus on one particular thing. While this is fun and I can play a variety of armies, I find I have many half finished "projects" as I bounce from one to another. Well I decided that I was going to organize my painting a little to see if I can get a couple of my projects finished over the next few months. So I thought I might as well share my plan with the readers.

March 25th - 31st:

For the remainder of March I plan on finishing the commissioned projects that I am doing for a few friends. This mean paints a few more Cygnar Miniatures for Warmachine. Painting Some Thousand Sons, Khorne Berzerkers and a ton of Terminators for a Chaos Army and painting an Imperial Guard army for a third friend (although this one I have plenty of time to do).

The April WAAAGH!

You have probably guessed it by the title, April will be devoted to Greenskins. I am going to start with my Orcs and Goblins fantasy army. First by updating the paint job on my older models to make them more match how I paint now. I finished one unit of boyz already and will post pictures of it tomorrow. Then I will go onto to building and painting the new models in my horde. If I can get the entire army done before the month is over then I will get a start of my Space Orks for 40K.

Month of Menoth

I have been seriously neglecting my Warmachine miniatures so May will become the Month of Menoth. I will first finish painting the models for the themed list I want to run. I will then move onto the remaining models that I own.

I have been missing the regular Thursday night games and I am really looking forward to making the next one as playing with an army always makes me want to finish painting it.

Well there you have it, my plan for the next couple of months. I am hoping to get at least two armies fully painted and possibly a third started. I just know I needed to get organized on my painting or I was never going to see another finished army. This will also give you an idea of the thing you will be seeing coming across the blog over the next several weeks as I keep up to date posts on where I am with each project.

Orcs and Goblins Army Book Review

Well the new Orcs and Goblins book has been out for a couple of weeks now so I thought I would give it a review. I know there are some other reviews out there but I wanted to give my opinion as a non-competitive player on the new rulebook.

First and foremost, I know some people complained when it was announced that the book would be hardback. I for one love it. I think the book is beautifully put together and just feels so much sturdier than any of my other Army Books. The full color is nice but I could have lived without it. The fluff section was pretty awesome and I particularly liked the timeline that was included. The Bestiary section was well put together but no different than other army books. I was a little disappointed with the hobby section as it seemed to only showcase the GW painted minis, there was no painting guide or examples of conversions and no sample army lists at all. The army list section is fairly standard but I don't like how no page numbers are listed for units until the last page of the section.

OK, now onto how I feel about the greenskin specific rules. The two biggest changes are to the Animosity and Choppa's rules and I personally love both. Animosity can still wreak your battle plans but over all I like what they did with it. The Choppas are by far one of the best things about this new army book. +1 strength in the first round of combat is going to be extremely useful and equipping my boyz with two choppas and in a horde should be pretty devastating.

Moving onto the characters. I have no complaints about and on the standard lords or heroes, but when you get into Special characters there are some issues for me. Chief among these issues is their points cost. This seems to be the trend for fantasy but some of the Characters are just crazy. My best example is Azhag the Slaughterer. At his points cost you cannot use him unless you a playing a minimum of 2500 points. On top of his cost, he has Stupidity which really makes him unreliable in my opinion. I just don't feel his rules match his fluff and his cost is just not worth it for me.

Now there are two Orc Special Characters I love, the first is Gorbad Ironclaw. While I still consider his cost a bit high he is actually worth taking. One of my favorite things about him is he allows you to take more than one unit of Big Uns.The only down fall is if he dies not only do you lose your General but he counts as your BSB as well.

The Second Orc character I like is also my favorite, Grimgor Ironhide. I personally feel that he is the best Orc Character in the book. He is hard as nails, strikes first, re-rolls misses and givens a nice upgrade to the mandatory unit of Black Orcs you must take with him.

I thought all of the Goblin characters were pretty fairly priced and all seem to be rather useful. I will definitely be looking to some of them for my all goblin army list.

Moving onto the core units, I really don't see any bad choices here. The Boyz are great, I am going to field at least one horde unit of them. I need to get some Arrer Boyz as they seem extremely useful. I love the Savage Orcs' Big Stabbas upgrade that gives them impact hits. Goblins are probably my least favorite choice though they can still be useful. Both Wolf Rider and Spider Rider units are good fast cav choices. Lastly my favorite unit in the core, the Night Goblins. Give em netters and Fanatics and just sit back and have fun :)

Next up are the special choices which are some of my favorites. Black Orcs are still full of awesomeness, I think both boar boyz types are a little pricey for me, but I would probably use them in a larger game. I like both the Orc and Goblin chariots; it is nice to know if I am getting short on points I always have the option for a cheaper chariot and Goblin chariots can be taken in groups of three, now if they just made it in plastic they would be perfect! Spear Chukkas, what is not to love about a 35 point warmachine :) I almost always field at least two. Night Goblin Squigg Hoppers and Herders are cool units that can dish out some damage but for me will only make an appearance in my goblin army. The Snotlings, what can I saw they are a nice tarpit unit that now have a pretty cool ranged attack option as well. Basic Trolls are probably one of my favorite additions to the special section; again if I am running low on points but want some trolls these guys are 10 points cheaper than their cousins and don't use up points for my rares if I am running close to the limit.

Last but not least is the Rare section. I am not going to go through each one because little has changed with the trolls and giants. I am disappointed that the Rock Lobber was moved to rare but in my opinion the Doom Diver is better so I will be spending on them instead.The Snotling Pump Wagon jus got even better, it has 4 cool upgrades a the Pump Harder Ladz rule lets you roll 3D6 for movement. I plan on having at least two of these in my armies. The two new additions to the rares are both excellent. First off is the Arachnarock Spider. I think the model looks great and the stats and price are pretty awesome. I don't plan on using either of the upgrades for this unit, I am going to take a basic spider and just run it at my enemy. Now my favorite addition, the Mangler Squiggs, These guys are just as devastating as Night Goblin Fanatics and just as random, the only disappointment is that GW did not make a model :( These will always be in my goblin army and will make appearances in most of my other armies.

Well there you have my take on the new Orcs and Goblins book. I think this is an excellent army book which I expect to enjoy playing for many years to come. Project Update: Captain Darius

I know I promised the pics over a week ago but real life got in the way. This is Captain E. Dominic Darius, a warcaster for the Warmachine army of Cygnar. This is one of the final models I have to paint for my buddy Mike, then I can spend more time focusing on my Menoth army.

At the top you can see Darius with his three little minions. To the right is a pic of just Darius himself. This model was pretty fun to paint and I am really happy with how the colors turned out. I haven't seen him used in a game yet but somehow I feel now that he is painted Mike will want to throw down with Darius leading the way.

I know I haven't updated the blog much lately, but I have been doing hobby stuff such as stripping some models I got in trade and assembling some models I picked up for my Imperial Fists and Black Templars.

I realized it has been awhile since I updated my Imperial Fists Project, so I thought I would update where I am on collecting the miniatures.

I was going to start painting the army but I have decided to put it off until I have it all collected that way I will get a consistent paint job throughout the army. My recently finished Sisters of Battle army bothers me somewhat because I can see the difference of my painting over the years and that is something I would like to avoid with this army. Tavern Talk - List Building

"After listening to a recent show of Heelanhammer I came across the idea of list building. I wanted to see how people went about building their lists. There are a host of methods people use. Some start with the rare slots or their character choices, while others get the core choice out of the way. Do you see a difference between a friendly pick up game list and a tournament list? One thing it seems many gamers often appear to view and consider with their lists is the meta game - how much attention do you put on the local meta-gaming? Are your lists consistent or do you change from game to game? I have heard of gamers tailoring their lists to work against certain armies or lists, does this appeal to you? How do you feel on the topic of tailored lists?"

On List Building:

When I am building lists I almost always think of a theme I am doing first. This gives me a basic idea of an army and how it will look and play. For example, I have been recently building lists for an all Goblin army, so right away that gives me a visual in my mind of the basic appearance of my army.

Once I have settled on a theme I always move to my Characters. I don't know if this is because I got into gaming through RPGs, but the characters are going to be where I begin. With 8th edition this has become a difficult step because I now can take many characters if I choose. I usually decide if I am going magic heavy and if so I will be taking at least a Level 3 wizard, most likely a level 4 which is how I went with my gobbo list.

Once I get my characters decided on I move onto units. I don't usually start with any one unit type in particular it really depends on what I am trying to do with my list. For example in my gobbos list I bought up all the war machines I owned. Gobbos are not great in combat so my plan with the list is to bombard the enemy with magic and firepower and let my goblins clean up what is left. I decided at this point I needed to get my troops in and took a 40+ Night Goblins Horde as a tarpit units with several 20 strong gobbo units in support.

At this point I grab any units I know I want, for instance Trolls or a giant, then I spend what ever I have remaining on those little extra units like fast cav / chariots. This is the same basic process I use on every list I build for Fantasy Battles.

On Type of Lists:

For me there doesn't have to be a difference between friendly lists and tournament lists. What you need to have is your opponents expectations during a friendly game. At a tournament people will be playing to win, but during a friendly game the two players should know what each other wants from the game. I always ask people I don't know if they are practicing for a tournament or just out to have fun, then I know what to expect before the game starts.

On The Meta-Game:

I hate this term almost as much as I hate Mathhammer. I pay no attention to the meta game in my area, I play the lists I want to play to the best of my ability and have fun doing so. When I have to start optimizing units and studying local habits to enjoy playing the game; I am then taking something I enjoy and turning it into work. It will then be time for me to leave the hobby

On Tailored Lists:

This can definitely be a touchy subject so my rule of thumb is to avoid it at all costs when playing people I meet at the store. When playing my friends I don't mind using tailored lists or if they do as long as we agreed on it. In a recent campaign I played against a friend we tailored our lists and still had a blast playing the battles

Battle Report: Sisters of Battle Vs. World Eaters

My buddy Scott and I got in a game of 40K over the weekend, so I thought I would put up a battle report. All the images can be enlarged by clicking on them.

Order of the Valorous Heart Vs. World Eaters
Mission: Seize Ground (5 Objectives)
Deployment Type: Dawn of War
Points Limit: 2000

This was the look of the board at the start of the game. We both had our two Troops and 1 HQ. The Sisters set up in the south with one unit of Battle Sisters guarding an object in the SW Building and another Battle Sisters unit guarding an objective in the center ruins. My Palatine and her retinue were encased in their Immolator behind the cover of a building on the East. The World Eaters had a unit of Berzerkers in a Rhino in the NW corner and a unit of Berzerkers with a Chaos Lord in a Rhino on the NE corner of the board. I kept Celestine and my Seraphim in reserve while Scott had 2 units of lesser Daemons and a Greater Daemon. Scott tried to seize the objective but failed.

Turn One: Not a whole lot happened on the first turn, mostly we just moved our remaining forces onto the board. We both kept the mass of our forces towards the center. I did throw my Sisters Repentia backed by a Priest on the right flank to deal with the Rhino.

Sisters of Battle Turn Two: On the second turn Saint Celestine and the Seraphim successfully deepstruck onto the roof of the SW building. I moved the Inquisitor and the unit of Battle Sisters he was with towards the chaos Rhino in the center. I moved my Sisters Repentia closer to the Rhino on the right flank but could not get off a charge. The other units continued moving forward as fast as possible. In the Shooting phase my Exorcist managed 4 shots at the Rhino in the center, two of which were blocked by a cover save, but the two that got through were able to destroy the vehicle. Amazingly none of the Bezerkers inside took damage from the blast, obviously Khorne was with them. The Inquisitor ordered that the Traitor Marines be cleansed, so my Battle Sisters opened up with a heavy flamer, flamer and bolters, but only managed to kill off three of the traitors, this would cost them soon!

World Eaters Turn Two: Scott had an excellent 2nd turn almost to the point I thought the game may be over. First hed had a unit of Lesser Daemons spawn in the center of the board then the Greater Daemon decided to make his presence known as well. The Champion was still inside a Rhino and we were not sure how that was handeled but since we were there to have fun and Scott was dismounting anyway, we played it off that he jumped out of the Rhino, then began twisting and scream until the Greater Daemon burst from his body. During the shooting phase the Havocs blew the heavy flamer off of the Palatines Immolator and then managed to immobilize it s well. In the assault phase the Daemon and Berserkers made short work on the Sisters Repentia, but it came at a cost. The Chaos Lord's Daemonic weapon turned on him causing a wound and the Repentia managed to kill a Berserker and cause a wound on the Greater Daemon. The Inquisitor and Sisters in the center did not fair as well, causing only a single wound on the Berserkers before being wiped out!

Sisters of Battle Turn Three: Going into turn 3 I was very concerned then I saw some thing I could do to wreak some havoc on Scott. I moved my Sisters guarding the SW objective up to confront the Berzerkers I then move my 2nd Immolater up to the newly arrived Daemons. Saint Celestine and the Seraphim flew towards the Chosen in the ruins and my Palatine and her Celestians left the immobilized Immolator moving towards the Choas Dread. Finally I had my Penitent Engines move towards the Defiler. In the shooting phase My Sisters opened up on the Berzerkers in the center with flamers and bolters killing all but one. The Immolater, a Battle Sister Squad and the Retributor Squad opened fire on the Daemons sending them screaming back into the warp. Then my dice failed me as both the Celestian melta gun and the Palatine's Inferno Pistol missed the Dreadnought at point blank range. The final Batlle Sister squad took pot shots at the Greater Daemon inflicting another wound. Lastly the Exorcist fired 6 missiles at the Greater Daemon blowing it howling back to the aether. Saint Celestine and the Seraphim charged the chosen killing them all and losing two of their own. The Sisters attacked the last Berzerker in the center killing him but not before two of them were felled. The Palatine attacked the Dreadnought with her Eviscerator but failed to do any damage, in return the dread killed off two of the Celestian retinue who then failed their leadership and were wiped out while attempting to run away. The final assault was the Penitent Engines attacking the Defiler, they attacked simultaneously and managed to all get immobilized. It was a good turn for me, but I took some losses I could not afford.

World Eaters Turn Three: Scott's other Lesser Daemon unit spawned in off the Berzerkers in the middle then proceeded to move towards my Sisters who were retreating back to their objective. The Berzerkers then fired a plasma at my Immolator shaking the crew. The Dreadnought assaulted my immobilized Immolator and managed to tear it to pieces. The Havocs managed to kill off two Seraphim, it would have been more but I finally managed to get off an act of faith giving them 3+ invulnerable saves. Laslty the Lord left his unit to single-handedly charge the Sisters of Battle unit while his Berserkers moved into secure an objective. In the Assault the Lord killed 4 sisters but also took another wound himself. The unit failed its leadership but still managed to escape the Lord and run away! I almost forgot the Penitent Engines managed to destroy the Defiler, but now just stood as useless immobilized hunks of metal. It was becoming dire both armies as our numbers continued to dwindle.

Sisters of Battle Turn Four: I moved my Sisters of Battle up to intercept the Daemons and managed to kill 3 to shooting. I took Celestine and the remaining Seraphim off to intercept the Berzerkers in the Center. My Exorcist fired at the Dread but he made all of his cover saves. My Retributors fired at the Chaos Lord leaving a burn hulk of flesh and armour where the warriors of the Dark Gods once stood. The Battle Sisters who were running away managed to rally while the final squad of sisters in the ruins fired on the Bezerkers killing 3. The Assault phase is where my dice turned against me. I assaulted the Daemons but failed to cause a single wound while taking 2 in return. I then failed my leadership test and got wiped out completely! That was definitely a loss I could ill afford!

World Eaters Turn Four: The Daemons attacked Saint Celestine killing off her remaining 2 Seraphim before the Living Saint returned them to the warp. The same did not hold true for the Battle Sisters in the ruins. Even with a faith point spent to get them an invulnerable save, they could not withstand an assault by both the Berserkers and a Dreadnought. The remaining Rhino opened up on the other Battle Sisters causing 2 wounds but they passed their panic test.

Sisters of Battle Turn 5: There was very little for me to do this turn. I moved Celestine to charge the Berzerkers and this would cost me later. Then the Retributors shot at the Berzerkers killing them to a man. This left Celestine out in the open and too far away to assault the dreadnought. The Exorcist fired two missiles at the Dread but it made both cover saves. Lastly the Melta gun in the final Sisters unit destroyed the Chaos Rhino.

World Eaters Turn 5: The Havocs blew the weapon off my Exorcist. Then a spawn amtacked Celestine who easily destroyed the beast. The dreadnought assaulted my Retributor squad chopping each member to bits as I failed another Faith Point roll so no invulnerable saves. Things were looking grim but the game continued into turn 6 so I still had a chance!

Turns 6 and 7: M plan for Turn 6 was to use my melta gun to and hopefully destroy the dreadnought. This failed epically as my melta gunner missed another close shot on the dread. The Living Saint killed the remaining Spawn. On Scott's turn the dread assaulted the Sisters and thanks to faith points finally working again I had 3+ invulnerable saves. This saved the unit and kept it in game for Turn 7.The only thing I did Turn 7 was attempt another shot at the Dreadnought which again went sailing past it. I then conceded the game as I had no way of pulling a draw let alone a victory.

This was a really hard fought battle that kept swaying back and forth with each passing turn. Scott played his army well and got to me quickly before I could really do a number on him with the Sister's shooting. I really can't believe how many Faith point tests I failed, but my blog didn't get its name out of thin air :). I would say the best performer for me was Saint Celestine and her Seraphim as they really did some damage on several units during the battle. All in all the game was a blast and I had a great time playing. Scott is always fun to play with and the game ran so smoothly we were done in just over 2 hours. I am looking forward to our next match up, hopefully soon.

Project Update: Penitent Engines

I put the finishing touches on these bad boys last night while listening to the latest Minions of the Monster Master Podcast. The Penitent Engines are a pretty cool model and I like the fact that both drivers look different. They are pretty detailed and I got a chance to paint some fire again which will come in hand as I continue to paint my Protectorate of Menoth for Warmachine.

For this model I went with a black undercoat followed by dry-brush of boltgun metal followed by highlight with mithril silver. All of the metal was then washed with badab black to give it that used oily feel. The rest of the colors are bleached bone, mechanite red, skull white and red gore all washed with devlan mud.

The second model was paint with a black base coat with tin bitz dry-brush followed by mithril silver dry brush for some aging. I then used the same colors as the first model on the driver and banners followed by a thorough application of devlan mud wash.

These models were a blast to paint due to all the detail available on the model. With their completion I now have only my Exorcist left to paint before my Sister's of Battle are fully painted. I may pick up a few more models (Most likely a 2nd Exorcist) but I am inclined to wait until they get a new codex before buying anything else.

DEEPSTRIKE Radio Flood Appeal

I just saw this tonight over at Dave Taylor Miniatures and felt it was worth mentioning. DEEPSTRIKE Radio is doing a charity drive to help the victims of the 2011 Queensland Floods. I have posted the banner to show my support and I am hoping others may do the same.

They are looking for support in the form of donations of money or Space Marine box sets. These sets will be used to build a Space Marine army that will be auctioned off on ebay with proceeds being donated to the Queensland Flood Appeal

Trying a New Game: Malifaux

After watching the guys at my FLGS play a few games, I decided that I am going to give Wyrd Miniatures' Malifaux a try as a new game. The miniature range is very unique and I am intrigued by the use of a deck of cards as opposed to dice rolls. The game was relatively cheap for me to get into as the box set pictured above was given to me by a friend who wants me to play the game. Even if I had to buy it this set retails for $35 so by far one of the cheapest starter sets I have seen. Even better is Wyrd Miniatures is going to be releasing the rules as a free PDF download, so I don't need to rush out and buy a rulebook until I know if I like the game. You don't even need to buy the Malifaux cards as you can use any regular deck of cards, but I already know I want the Malifaux cards because I thought the artwork on them was very cool.

Another reason I am excited is because I am going to use these models to tryout some new painting techniques I have wanted to try. I went with the Arcanists faction and chose Ramos and the Miners and Steelfitters Union as the starter box set. Ramos seems to use allot of metal automatons so I thought this might be the perfect opportunity to try my hand at Non-Metallic Metals (NMM). Also as you can see in the image to the right Ramos has a magical fireball in his hand so I felt this would be the perfect mini to practice Object Source Lighting (OSL) on. So I will be showing off my attempts at both NMM and OSL in future posts to the blog.

As far as Malifaux goes, I would love to hear from anyone who has played the game, I am looking for honest opinions to help me decide if this game is worth investing a little more money in. I have already picked up a Steampunk Arachnid Swarm blister to add to my group as 3 individual Steampunk Arachnids and am willing to buy more i this is a quality game, other wise these are just going to be some cool minis that I use to practice painting techniques on.

Mik's Minis: Go Check it out!

When I first started my blog, Mik's Minis was one of the first blogs I added to my blog roll. Mik (aka Gyro) always has interesting posts and I thoroughly enjoy reading his blog.

Today Mik reached 750 posts on his blog and he added a nice little post about it. Through his post Mik mentioned the only way things could be better would be if he hit the 200 followers mark, well as of this post he sits at 197, just 3 shy of this goal.

So basically I am asking you all to go check out his blog and if you are not a follower please become one. Lets see if we can get Mik his last 3 followers.

First Painted Mini of 2011: Cygnar Thunder Head

Well here it is, my first completed model of 2011 and it is not even mine LOL. This is a Cygnar Thunderhead Warjack from my buddy Mike's Cygnar commission work. This was easily the coolest Cygnar warjack I have painted yet. It was very detailed and had a pretty cool dynamic pose that reminded me of the Heisman trophy pose.

Wellnow that he is finished I am moving on to some of my own stuff, two Penitent Engines for my Sisters of Battle. After that I will most likely be updating the paint jobs on my Orcs & Goblins as well as Space Wolves. I still have a few more Cygnar models to get to but they are a little further down in the painting queue .
