Space Wolf Army List

I mentioned a few posts ago that my friend Brandon recently gave me the entire Space Wolf army I had painted for him. I have been very excited about receiving this army as Space Wolves were my very first 40K army.

Naturally since getting the Army I have been toying with lists. My favorite Wolf Lord has always been Ragnar Blackmane but I never play special characters in my list because they are usually 1850 points or less. Well most people around me are running at 2000 points so I thought why not make a list with my favorite Character in it.

So below I am posting my Ragnar Blackmane list. I am shooting for a list that is both competitive as well as fluffy, but when it comes down to it I will stick with fluff over competitive. I have Blood Claws because Ragnar still acts like one so I thought it fitting that a force he is leading would contain them. The Wolf Guard will be split up and leading each one of the Grey Hunter and Bloodclaw units.

Tavern Talk - 8th Edition; how has it changed your army?

The only army I have played several games with in 8th edition is my Orcs and Goblins and I must say that I have enjoyed it so much that my 10 year old army is getting a new paint job on some units and I have even purchased a few new units for it.

I think 8th edition in general really levels the playing field among all armies as compared to 7th edition, but there are several areas where the 8th edition rules have really helped my Greenskins and made them a force to be reckoned with.

One of the toughest things for me when playing Greenskins in the past has been the randomness that comes from the Greenskins animosity rule. Now with some of the randomness built right into 8th edition, (random spell dice, random charge distance) it has made it so all armies must deal with random events in the game and this is really feel has made a difference for me when playing Orcs and Goblins.

Another rule that this army really benefits from is horde rule. We have cheap troops so building hordes is easy. I now always run at least a Horde of Night Goblins, combine the hordes rule with the spears rule and then throw in netters and Night Goblin Fanatics and you have a unit that can stand up to just about everything. I am seriously considering running an all goblin army under 8th edition rules.

I have always loved Greenskin magic but rarely did I ever bother taking anything more than a scroll caddy for the Orcs and Goblins. With the changes to magic I now find myself fielding at least 2 casters and usually one of them is a lord. While yes there is no guarantee that you will get spells off magic is much more useful and when it does go off it is usually pretty fun to watch.

Well those are just a few of the ways that I feel the Orcs and Goblins have benefited  from the changes in 8th edition. I would love to hear any of your opinions on benefits I may have missed for the Greenskins, please feel free to leave a comment on the subject. As always, thank you for taking the time to read my blog.

I have got a new game: Flames of War

Back in July I posted that I was "Taking a Break From 40K" and so far it has been about two months since i have played a game. I am still painting my minis and working on army lists, I just haven't had the urge to play a game. In the meantime I have been playing Warhammer Fantasy Battles and Warmachine/Hordes. Well my buddy Scott has been trying to get me to try Flames of War for awhile now, but I have been reluctant as I have never really been into historical gaming. Two things changes my mind, first off I love WWII, it is probably my favorite thing to read about in history. Secondly Scott just made me a deal I couldn't pass up, if I would be willing to learn Flames of War he would give me my my first army. Well I am not one to turn away free minis and thus my collection of the 82nd Airborne has begun.

On Wednesday Scott showed up at the game store with the following box sets for me.

Parachute 81mm Mortar Platoon
Parachute Machine Gun Platoon
So I  knew that Flames of War was a 15mm game, but I was not aware just how small this is. I spent most of Thursday afternoon gluing the minis to their bases as well as my fingers and now I have about 1750 points of the 82nd Airborne "The All American Division" assembled and ready to paint.

I really can't say I am looking forward to painting this army but I will rise to the challenge. I am still reading the rules, but so far this seems like a game I will really enjoy. This means that this blog will no longer be a 40K only blog, but will also be used to chronicle my adventures in Flames of War as well.

So now I am looking for any of you that have experience with this game to give me some advice, not just on playing the game but also on easy ways to paint an army and any terrain tutorial for 15mm that you may know about. As always, thanks for stopping by and please fell free to leave me a comment.

Project Update: The Covenant of Menoth

I finished one of my favorite Menoth models last night, The Covenant of Menoth. I like this model both as a miniature and as the unit in game so I had to get it in the painting queue early. It is pretty useful for buffing my army so i find it is usually in most of my lists. As a model is was a total blast to paint, fairly detailed usually equals fun and this model was no let down.

Well please feel free to let me know what you think.

Project Update: Space Wolf Razorback

A few weeks ago I got an amazing gift from my friend Brandon. He gave me his entire Space Wolf army that I had painted for him. One of the Razorbacks needed a turret so I decided to take this opportunity to use this Las/Plas Conversion tutorial.

I am very pleased with the results of this extremely simple conversion, so once it was completed I primed and and painted it up to match the Razorback. I even added a bit of snow texture so that it would fit in with the rest of the model.

This is going to be the first of a few projects I have with my newly acquired Space Wolves. I have several unpainted minis and I also plan on some repaints to bring the colors more inline with the pack markings in the new Codex.

I am very pleased with how the Razorback turned out. With the success of this conversion, I am going to buy another Razorback kit to use my last set of Forge World doors on. I will be using this same conversion and that will give me a total of four Razorbacks, two with Twin-linked Assault Cannons and Two with the Las/Plas.

So stay tuned for further Space Wolf updates as I will be working on them more heavily once I finish up my Witchhunters/Sister of Battle models. As always thanks for stopping by and please feel free to leave a comment or two!

GW you just lost a new army purchase!

I am so disappointed with the prices Games Workshop is charging for their new High Elf range that I have totally scrapped my plans to start a High Elf army.

Here we see the first item that effected my decision, The Island of Blood box set. Don't get me wrong the miniatures are fantastic but the price of $99.00 is just not acceptable to me in the least bit, especially when I only want half of the models.  Yes I know I could trade someone else my Skaven for their Elves, but I just can't justify paying around $30.00 more for this starter set compared to the old one.

Then came the real kick in the pants, $41.99 for both the new plastic Phoenix Guard and White Lions sets. When I first looked I thought this was awesome as the models looked great but then I continued reading on and saw that both only come with 10 minis. You have got to be kidding me, 10 minis for $41.99. That was it, I dropped my plans for a new High Elf army.

The only new set I feel is worth the price is the Dragon Princes at $29.75, which is exactly the price I would have expected the other two sets to be. I mean technically they have the same amount of minis, 5 knights and 5 horses so what is the justification for such a difference in prices? It can't be the cost of plastics or this set would cost the same. All I know is that I am not satisfied with these prices and GW has lost my purchase of an Entire High Elf army.

I know Games Workshop is a company and their goal is to make a profit, but I personally feel they are starting to rip off their customers, A friend of mine who orders from GW for my FLGS knew I wanted more Night Goblins for my Greenskins army and told me to buy them soon as after the New Year all basic units would be dropping down to 10 models per box. Luckily I found a deal for the Battle for Skull Pass set and I picked it up for $25 so my Night Goblin issues are resolved.

I am not going to stop playing Warhammer Fantasy Battles, but I will not be purchasing any new armies, at least not directly from Games Workshop. I am going to just stick to the armies I have and make purchases for them that I need to fill in gaps. I am sad to see a hobby I have enjoyed for 12 years, become financially nonviable for me. Luckily I have four complete armies so I will still enjoy the game, but the new prices have killed any plans for me to purchase new armies in the future.

So let me know what you think.

Is GW getting a little crazy with their prices?
How is it effecting you?
Am I just cheap or do others feel the same way?
